“Here's another reason why enunciation is so important for radio announcers. There's a really big difference between a bum sniffing dog and a bomb sniffing dog.”

    Transcribed by: [info]rubian77

[Incidentally, the auto-transcription was almost spot-on. It thought I said "annunciation" (ironically enough) and "bombs smitten dog and a bomb smitten dog." The thought of a bomb smitten dog is a whole other matter....]

    Damn you, Dead Milkmen!
One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead
I met a girl there and she almost knocked me dead

    Punk rock girl
    Please look at me
    Punk rock girl
    What do you see?
    Let's travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

I tapped her on the shoulder
And said do you have a beau?
She looked at me and smiled and said she did not know

    Punk rock girl
    Give me a chance
    Punk rock girl
    Let's go slam dance
    We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl

We went to the Philly Pizza Company
    And ordered some hot tea
The waitress said well no, we only have it iced
So we jumped up on the table and shouted anarchy
And someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox
    It it was "California Dreamin"
    So we started screamin
    On such a winter's day

She took me to her parents for a Sunday meal
Her father took one look at me and he began to squeal

    Punk rock girl
    It makes no sense
    Punk rock girl
    Your dad is vice president
Just like the Duke of Earl
Yeah you're for me punk rock girl

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us to a record shop
    We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said he don't work here
We said if you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin

We got into her car away we started rollin
I said how much you pay for this
    Said nothin man it's stolen

    Punk rock girl
    You look so wild
    Punk rock girl
    Let's have a child
    We'll name her Minnie Pearl
    Just you and me
    Eat fudge banana swirl
    Just you and me
    We'll travel round the world
    Just you and me
    Punk rock girl

    Hobopolis, Ho!
Apparently there are something like a million hobos (hoboes?). (Ok, it's 3000. Feels like a million.) I did open up Burnbarrel Blvd after getting Richard to make two Scarehobos - Having the "Flavour of Magic" makes it easy to get the different scarehobo parts, as long as the randomness of the drop mechanism is being favorable.

I've got the hobo code binder, but I need to do all of those other adventures elsewher to decode it...and it seems counterintuitive to go back and re-adventure where I've been. But I'm not ready to ascend and start over - level 28 and counting! - so I'm just going to keep on keeping on and see what happens. :)

(And yeah, I know there are only two people out there who might give a rat's ass, but if you don't like it you can skip it. So there. *sticks out tongue*)

After hearing several references to it in MST3k, I re-read John Knowles' A Separate Peace recently and came to the following brief conclusions:

    1. John Knowles, as an author, sucks (in my humble opinion). His style is difficult to read, awkward at best, and occasionally so convoluted it's impossible to know what's going on.
As my husband put it, "Knowles writes like a gay American man trying to sound like a straight British man, and failing miserably." I know it's set in New England, but the narrator is supposed to be from the south; there are certain usages that don't quite sound right to me. Perhaps it's the time period in which it takes place.

    2. I read this in the late 80's/early 90's and before we studied WWI/WWII in history class. Therefore, I had no point of reference for what was going on in the story or their frames of mind - which has led me to think that as students are taught history, they should be reading age-appropriate novels which are based on the same time period. Studying Victorian England? Read Dickens. Studying ancient history? Read Beowulf. That sort of thing. Many of the references would have made so much more sense if I'd have known about gas rationing, etc, before/while I read the novel.

    3. Holy closeted gay men, Batman. If I had the time and inclination, I would re-read it (again) and highlight all of the homoerotic undertoned passages. I don't think there's anything wrong with being gay, or bringing out homoerotic undertones in a work of fiction, but I am frankly shocked that although the book was standard fare in some high schools* NO ONE BRINGS IT UP in those lame-ass classroom discussions they always seem to have when you're reading a "thought-provoking" novel. There's also a bit of surprise that it was taught in the first place, since in the middle of PA gays were still stigmatized to a great extent even when I was graduating in 1995. Then again, since no one brought it up, perhaps we were all so resistant to the notion of being taught a book with such content that we repressed it ourselves. Or no one really read into it enough - I for one never read the book for enough meaning, scanning pages just enough to understand the overall gist of what went on but never analyzing the subtext.

    So. Your thoughts?

    * - I had to read it, as did my husband, and I've got the poll to find out if it's as common as I thought it was.

I'm trying to read Moby Dick, but it's slow going because Melville is a wordy son-of-a-gun. He devoted an entire chapter to questionable whale science. I mean, seriously...gah.

And of course, the question of why the whale is named "Moby Dick" came up once again.

Never one to miss the opportunity for a quip, my husband remarks, "Maybe we should check 'Whalekipedia' to find out the reason...unless, of course, they took that page down because of a lack of in-line cetaceans!"

In after Christmas stuff. Not much else for me to say about that. It wasn't bad, it was just kinda "there".

And here it goes again: That big year-end cleanup I (attempt) to do towards the end of each year. It's not that I don't make any progress, because I do, it's that the end results aren't as comprehensive as I'd like. Nevertheless, it's important that I go this alone, no matter how many memories I encounter.

Starting off with the obvious, things like laundry, dishes, taking out straight-up trash, that sort of thing. But before I could begin any of that, the prerequisite task was to make sure my big-dog-ass master playlist was all reconciled and stuff. Making sure there weren't any dead links out of something like 12k music files (plus another 5k on the PC, plus the countless files I haven't even added to either system yet). It's easier on the PowerBook, as there's an Applescript that goes through and makes a list of all the dead links and then I just go and find them. But! That's done now, and by now, most of the aforementioned obvious tasks as well, and a fair amount of recyclable items ready to go out.

This year I don't have the time sink of an obstacle that is looking for a new car, as both [info]nozomichan05 and [info]aichan95 have been both very well-behaved. I was surprised at how much time was used up not in finding a used RSX-S, but in finding one that hadn't been modified all to hell or abused or put on the lot with a "reconstructed" title (which there were a few of).

So, I have over 12k of songs set on "random", got on a KMFDM shirt to get me in that DIY frame of mind, stocked up on Vault, and have thusly turned most of my home into a work zone, which will likely stay that way until I head back to work on the 4th. Or better yet, if I can finish it all.

a pun for you, for Christmas.
If one were to play that one theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey by slapping flesh, would that be "Thus Spanked Zarathustra"?

(I'll leave the visuals up to you.)
